Carolyn is respected and appreciated in our college and department because of her willingness to go above and beyond in her work. She is very thoughtful about any problem that comes to her attention and is diligent at finding a solution. She problem-solves extremely well and is a walking encyclopedia of information, which helps her find solutions. But to balance out her knowledge, she has genuine kindness to everyone she meets. Carolyn is well liked by the students, and they find refuge in her office with their struggles. Perhaps because she is an immigrant herself, she understands and has compassion for everyone.
Carolyn has repeatedly stepped up and done more than what was within her job description. During the 2020 COVID shutdown, she personally made sure the Plant and Wildlife Sciences (PWS) office was able to continue to function by being the sole person in the office for several months.
Another example of her willingness to do everything to support "the team" was in 2021, when a staff employee gave a one-day notice of termination. Carolyn stepped in and filled that role and her own until the empty position could be filled.
Carolyn always helps in big and small ways. She is friendly, kind, and exacting in her work. People often bring problems to Carolyn because of her initiative and ability to think outside the box to find solutions. She is a great, Christlike example to all. Carolyn is also prayerful about each student that comes into her office with issues that are not easy to resolve. She is inclusive and very careful with implicit biases she may have.
Carolyn is always looking for ways to improve students' experiences. Specifically, last summer, she went on a study abroad to Costa Rica. There were some worries and concerns about a particular student going on the trip, but Carolyn took that student under her wing and really looked out for them. The student had a great time and made a dear friend in Carolyn. Carolyn does these sorts of things on the daily. She is very aware of students' needs and tries very hard to meet those needs, whatever they may be. We are very lucky to have here in our college.
